Interested in joining our team? Mercy R&D is a small, fast-growing multidisciplinary research and development group located in Springfield, Missouri. At Mercy R&D we work with our physicians and co-workers in identifying healthcare pitfalls, devising solutions that improve patient care in a cost-effective manner, creating innovative market-savvy products, and taking products to market through various avenues of commercialization.

This process includes problem identification, product conceptualization, market analysis, product prototyping, testing, modification, applying for intellectual property, and commercialization through independent or collaborative manufacturing or product licensing. We are truly a translational research group comprised of multidisciplinary academic, medical, and business professionals in an integrated collaborative model.

Research Intern

Part time Research Intern position opening (Min 60 hours/biweekly, max 72 hours/biweekly) for conducting basic and translational research and assisting with general operational/administrative projects at Mercy R&D. Candidate will preferably have experience working for a research laboratory. This position will serve on multiple project teams for a variety of devices and will assist with medical device design, chemical and material analysis and testing, device fabrication in-lab or through contract manufacturers, and device testing and reporting.

Minimum requirements:

•Minimum 60 hours completed towards Bachelor’s degree in applied Science (Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Engineering) or a related appropriate discipline

•Basic knowledge of lab techniques/safety and other related research lab protocols that pertain to the area of training.

A successful candidate will be familiar with the medical device industry or with healthcare, have experience in design and drafting, succeed in team-oriented and independent projects, excel in detail-oriented and independent projects/responsibilities and multitasking, experience in maintaining laboratory notebooks, and have excellent communication skills. Experience in writing and presenting scientific research papers is preferred.

Job Description:

•Conduct basic to advanced experiments in a chemistry laboratory which includes routine preparation of reagents, chemical and mechanical testing, spectroscopic analyses, and drug-delivery profiling.

•Fabrication of device prototypes for testing and characterization

•Assist with general operations projects

•Good written skills and familiarity with social media and technology transfer.

The following skills/knowledge are also essential to the Research Intern: Effective organizational and interpersonal skills, ability to work successfully in groups and independently, proficiency with basic Microsoft Office and graphics software, satisfactory communication skills, particularly in face-to-face encounters with healthcare professionals and the public, effective interactions with technical team, administrative team clinical team and corporate collaborators, occasional lifting and carrying of materials and equipment weighing up to fifty pounds, normal color vision for conducting experiments.
